Best Cashback Apps: 9 Compared (Sign-Up Bonuses and Referral Terms)

Last checked: November 4, 2026. Looking for the best cashback apps? Cashback apps pay you a share of what you spend on shopping, gas, gift cards or groceries, and most add a sign-up bonus for new users. We compared 9 of them on the bonus you get for joining, whether there is a referral code, and how we rate the offer overall. We compare sign-up and referral terms here, not everyday cashback rates, which change by retailer and week. Most sign-up bonuses are tied to spending or completing offers first, so the headline number is rarely free money.

We have referral codes or links for Rakuten, Ibotta, Fetch Rewards, Upside, RebatesMe, Fluz and PayPal Honey, and may earn a reward if you use them. The other apps below are listed without codes, and we don’t publish anyone else’s codes. You must be 18 or older, and most of these apps are US only.

Key findings

  • Most bonuses come with a catch. Rakuten’s welcome bonus is an extra 10% cash back, up to $50, so you have to shop to earn it. Ibotta’s $20 welcome bonus needs 10 offers in 14 days, and TopCashback’s $25 needs $10 in cash back within 180 days.
  • Payouts can be slow. Rakuten pays only four times a year (February, May, August and November 15) and takes 3 to 14 weeks to confirm online purchases. PayPal Honey’s pending referrals typically take 60 to 90 days.
  • Referral caps are usually unstated. Rakuten and Fetch say there is no limit, and Ibotta shows none. PayPal Honey says its bonuses are capped but doesn’t publish the number. For most of the rest, the cap isn’t published, so a code that stops working may have hit one.
  • Offers change often. Rakuten’s referral offer runs from October 1 to December 31, 2026, and RebatesMe’s runs through December 31, 2026.

How we rate: Our rating is an editorial score out of 5 based on each app’s published terms. We weigh the size of the bonus against what you have to do to earn it, how cash-like and fast the payout is, how clear the referral terms are, and trust signals. We haven’t tested the payouts ourselves, and ratings aren’t based on what we earn from an app.

What you have to do to get paid, and referral limits

  • Rakuten: the referral offer runs October 1 to December 31, 2026. A friend has to spend $50 within 90 days for the referrer to earn $50, and a return, exchange or fraud flag cancels it. There’s no referral limit. Cash back pays out quarterly with a $5 minimum, by PayPal, check or gift card.
  • Ibotta: the code has to be entered during sign-up, and Ibotta says it can’t be added afterward. The $5 referral bonus comes after you redeem a first offer. No referral cap is reported. Cash-out minimums are reported at $20 for PayPal and Venmo and $25 for gift cards.
  • Fetch Rewards: your friend joins with your code and snaps a first receipt, then points are added automatically. There is no referral limit.
  • Upside: enter the code before you claim any offers. A referrer earns 10¢ each time a friend makes an Upside purchase over $5. Our code’s per-gallon amount is higher than Upside’s standard 15¢ referral bonus. No cap is stated.
  • TopCashback: the $25 can’t be combined with other sign-up promotions. Referrers get a bonus once a friend earns $10 in cash back, but the amount isn’t published on the referral page, and no cap is stated.
  • RebatesMe: the $5 needs $15 in purchases within 30 days. A referrer earns $10 once a friend earns $10 in cash back within 90 days. The referral limit isn’t stated, and RebatesMe bans bidding on its brand or keywords to earn referral bonuses without authorization.
  • Fluz: the first $5 comes after account setup steps, and the 25% boosts apply to your first two gift card purchases. The referral limit isn’t stated.
  • Capital One Shopping: your friend has to install the extension, verify an email, and use it regularly for 90 days. There’s no limit on referrals you send, but the cap on the bonus isn’t stated.
  • PayPal Honey: you join through a referral link, not a typed code. A referrer gets 500 points after a friend earns points on a first purchase, and pending referrals typically take 60 to 90 days to clear. The bonuses are capped, but the number isn’t published.

Which is the best cashback app?

There isn’t one best cashback app, and we haven’t tested the payouts ourselves. On the terms we could source, Rakuten and Ibotta rate highest. Rakuten has the largest welcome bonus, no referral limit and several payout methods, but it pays only four times a year. Ibotta is the one you can reach quickest if you already buy groceries, since it needs 10 offers in 14 days and pays through PayPal or Venmo. Fetch asks the least of you, since a single receipt earns your points. Whichever you choose, check the spending requirement before you count the bonus as free money.

How we compared these apps

We used each app’s own site, help pages and terms where they state a number, and labeled everything else as coming from a third-party reviewer. Where sources disagreed or were out of date, we say so or left the cell as “not published.” We didn’t include Dosh, Shopkick or Drop because we couldn’t find current terms for them. Bonuses change often, so confirm the current terms in each app before you spend money.

What to check before you join a cashback app

  1. The spending requirement. Many bonuses only pay after a purchase or a number of redeemed offers.
  2. The time window. Bonuses often expire in 14 to 180 days.
  3. When you can cash out. Some apps pay out months after a purchase, and some require a minimum balance.
  4. How you get paid. Cash back can arrive as PayPal, Venmo, gift cards or points.
  5. Whether the offer is limited-time. Several offers here end on December 31, 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Which cashback app has the best sign-up bonus?

Rakuten’s extra 10% cash back, up to $50, is the largest we found, followed by Ibotta’s $25 and TopCashback’s $25. All three require spending or completing offers first, so the amount you net depends on whether you would have bought those items anyway.

Is there a limit on how many friends you can refer?

It depends on the app. Rakuten and Fetch say there is no limit. PayPal Honey caps its referral bonuses but doesn’t publish the number, and several others don’t say. If a friend’s code is rejected, it may have reached a cap.

Do cashback apps pay real cash?

Some do. Rakuten pays by PayPal or check, and Ibotta is reported to pay through PayPal, Venmo and a linked bank account. Fetch and Fluz pay in points or gift cards, and PayPal Honey pays in points, so the value depends on what you redeem.

Do I need a referral code to get the bonus?

Often yes. Ibotta, Upside and Rakuten tie their referral bonus to a code or link entered at sign-up, and Ibotta says it can’t be added after you finish registering.

Are cashback apps safe?

Reputable cashback apps are generally safe, but they collect data about your purchases, and some require linking a card or bank account. Read each app’s privacy terms before you connect anything, and never share your login.
